How a p2p-driven mutual coordination economy may solve the economic calculation problem (2) | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Two days ago, we presented the article by Seth Ackerman in which he presented the ‘economic calculation problem’ and various solutions to it, ending his argument with a call for a form of socialized finance which would respect the autonomy of the firm. For a more in-depth understanding, see how I have processed his arguments …

Open Source Farming Equipment is vital for farmers | P2P Foundation

Open Source Farming Equipment is vital for farmers | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The cost and hassle of repairing modern tractors has soured a lot of farmers on computerized systems altogether. In a September issue of Farm Journal, farm auction expert Greg Peterson noted that demand for newer tractors was falling. Tellingly, the price of and demand for older tractors (without all the digital bells and whistles) has picked up. “As for the simplicity, you’ve all heard the chatter,” Machinery Pete wrote. “There’s an increasing number of farmers placing greater value on acquiring older simpler machines that don’t require a computer to fix.”

Research Thesis (PhD): Making Commons for Peer Production | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
The opening of production is mobilizing and feeding a number of possible futures that span from the creation of a post-capitalist mode of production based on shared resources, to the idea of collaboration and sharing as the new mantra for possible business models and startups. An in-depth mapping of the opening of production, the possibilities and challenges it entails is provided further on. What is important to highlight here is both how it challenges the traditional role of the designer and how it seems to open up the possibility of transforming or reforming the actual production system toward a more social and environmentally sustainable one.”

The FabLab World Tour Documentary

“This is the story of a quest for answers to how a designer can help people create their own products. How we can collaborate globally and produce locally, and how we can make a living while sharing knowledge and designs?

A series on true accelerationist technologies that will be instrumental against biospheric destruction. “With sustainability at the core of the design, parts can be manufactured directly from digital files at ‘Microfactories’, reducing the costs and carbon footprint associated with molding, casting and machine use. Steve Bosserman on Economic Sustainability in a world of Open Design | P2P Foundation

The issue is the following: this free (as in free speech) but also zero dollar approach, centered around common value production, does not have it’s own means of sustainability. And critically, advertising will not be able to fill the enormous gap between the exponential rise in common value production, and the linear monetization of attention through advertising. Also, critically, we do not (as yet, and perhaps never), live in a society which has a clear mechanism for funding common value production.

Peer production, the guilds, and the washing machine

Peer production, the guilds, and the washing machine | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

This is not a new article, but a transcript of a marvellous talk by Graham Seaman in 2002 (at the Oekonux conference). I have added it to our selection of key peer to peer essays, which I believe everyone should read to understand the various key aspects of peer production and governance.
